Anyone who has seen Ölüdeniz once doesn’t easily forget that turquoise colour. But this is more than a picture-perfect lagoon: in this small seaside town near Fethiye you can rise 100 metres above the sea in the morning, swim in a cove in the afternoon and watch paragliders drift down from Babadağ in the evening. First, a quick orientation: where is Ölüdeniz and what is where?
Ölüdeniz belongs to the Fethiye district of Muğla and lies about 14 km from Fethiye centre. The name “Ölüdeniz” is usually used for two different places; knowing the difference makes planning easier:
- Ölüdeniz Lagoon (Nature Park): The calm, enclosed bay from the postcards. It is protected, entry is paid and motorised craft are not allowed inside the lagoon.
- Belcekız Beach: The long beach right next to the lagoon, lined with hotels and restaurants. It is public and free; most water sports take place in the open bay in front of it. For more about the beach, see our Belcekız Beach guide.
Hisarönü and Ovacık, which look down on the town, are accommodation areas; from there it is a short dolmuş ride down to Ölüdeniz.
Things to do at sea
1. A calm morning swim in the lagoon
On most days the lagoon water is calmer and shallower than the open sea. It is ideal for families with children and anyone who doesn’t like waves. Crowds build towards midday, so go early: the light is nicer and sunbeds are easier to find.
2. A full day of sea and sun on Belcekız Beach
Belcekız is Ölüdeniz’s main beach: entry is free, and along the shore you’ll find sunbed hire, showers, cafés and restaurants. With Babadağ rising right in front of you, it is the town’s social centre.
3. Seeing the lagoon from above with parasailing
Ölüdeniz’s most iconic view is the one from above. Parasailing is a 10–15 minute flight in which you rise to about 100–150 metres under a parachute attached by rope to a speedboat. 4. Speed along the coast on a jet ski

5. Banana, ringo or big mable with friends
Being swung around on an inflatable behind a boat is one of the most fun water sports to do as a group. The banana is gentle and family-friendly; the phantom is much harder. We explain which one suits you in our towables comparison.
6. Exploring at your own pace by SUP or canoe
For paddling without engine noise while watching the clear water, SUP and canoe are great alternatives. They are much more enjoyable in the calm morning hours; details in our SUP and canoe guide.
7. Trying wakeboard or water ski
For those who want to learn a skill, water ski and wakeboard are a good challenge. Both require you to be able to swim. Water ski is usually the easier start for beginners.
8. Having your activity filmed by drone
The best way to capture the moment without taking your phone into the water is a professional drone video or photo shoot during your activity. With the lagoon and Babadağ in the same frame, the result is truly striking.
Things to do by boat
9. Visiting Butterfly Valley

10. A cove-to-cove boat tour
Daily boat tours usually stop for swims at the Blue Cave, Soğuksu Bay, Butterfly Valley and the coves around Gemiler Island. There are half-day and full-day options. For choosing a route and what to bring, see our boat tour guide.
11. A short, fast coastal trip by speed boat
If you don’t want to spend a whole day on a boat, a speed boat tour is a practical way to see the best spots on the coast in a short time.
12. Getting to the cove of your choice by taxi boat
If you want to go to a particular cove, spend time there and come back on your own schedule, the taxi boat is the most flexible option.
Things to do on land
13. Summit views from the Babadağ cable car
Babadağ is 1,969 metres high, and the cable car carries visitors to the mountain’s upper stations. From up there you see Ölüdeniz, Belcekız and the lagoon all at once. Pick a clear, cloudless day; the late afternoon is lovely for the view.
14. Paragliding, or watching the paragliders

15. Walking the first stage of the Lycian Way
The Lycian Way, which runs from Fethiye to Antalya, starts in Ovacık. Even if you don’t walk the whole trail, a short hike on the first kilometres gives you a view of Ölüdeniz from above. In summer start early to beat the heat and carry plenty of water. For more about the area, see our Ovacık page.
16. Exploring the abandoned stone houses of Kayaköy
Kayaköy, right next to Hisarönü, is a historic settlement of hundreds of stone houses spread across the hillside. It is best visited in the cooler hours, in comfortable shoes.
17. Dinner and shopping in Hisarönü
Hisarönü, above Ölüdeniz, is known for its restaurants and nightlife. Sea by day, Hisarönü by night is the ideal balance for many of our guests.
18. The fish market and marina in Fethiye centre
Set aside an evening for Fethiye centre: a walk along the marina and the fish market are Fethiye classics. It is easy to get there from Ölüdeniz by dolmuş; details in our transport guide.
19. A sunset walk along Belcekız beach
When the beach calms down in the late afternoon, a walk along the shore is the most peaceful way to end the day. As the sun sinks towards Babadağ, the light is at its softest for photos.
20. Setting aside a “slow hour” in your day
Don’t rush to tick off the list. Some of Ölüdeniz’s best moments are the ones you spend doing nothing, watching the colour of the lagoon from a sunbed. Spread the busy activities over the morning and late afternoon, and rest in the shade during the midday heat.
