Say “Ölüdeniz” and two images come to mind: colourful paragliders drifting down from Babadağ to Belcekız Beach, and parasailing canopies rising above the lagoon, attached to a boat. Both are “flying”, but they differ greatly in experience, duration and thrill. We hear “which one should we do?” on the beach so often that we put together this comparison.
- Parasailing: A short, controlled flight over the sea, attached to a boat. Gentler for a first experience and for anyone wary of heights.
- Paragliding: A longer, higher flight taking off from Babadağ and gliding down to the beach with a tandem pilot.
- If you have the time and budget, they aren’t alternatives but complements.
The key difference: where you take off and who is in control
In parasailing you take off from a speedboat at sea. You are attached to the boat by a rope; rising, descending and landing are entirely controlled by the captain and the winch on the boat. All you do is sit.
In paragliding you take off from one of the high launch sites on Babadağ after a short run. Tourist flights are tandem: a licensed pilot sits behind you and steers the wing. The flight continues on thermals and wind and ends on the landing area at Belcekız Beach.
Side-by-side comparison
| Parasailing | Paragliding (tandem) | |
|---|---|---|
| Take-off | Speedboat, at sea | Babadağ launch site |
| Height | About 100–150 m (on our flights in Ölüdeniz) | Starts from the mountain’s high launch sites (Babadağ is 1,969 m) |
| Flight time | About 10–15 minutes | Usually longer; varies with weather and operator |
| Total time | Leaving and returning to the beach is quick | The drive up, waiting and flight can take half a day |
| Control | Boat and winch | Tandem pilot |
| Effort at take-off | None, seated | A short run is needed |
| Thrill | Calm, focused on the view | More intense; a strong sense of height and gliding |
| Flying together | Single, double or triple | Pilot + one passenger |
| Weather sensitivity | Depends on sea and wind | Depends on mountain wind and visibility |
Which one if you’re afraid of heights?
If you’re wary of heights, parasailing is in most cases the gentler start. Take-off is gradual, you don’t run off the edge of a cliff and you stay at a relatively low altitude above the sea throughout. In paragliding, taking off from a mountain top makes that “first step” psychologically harder.
That said, many people experience the opposite: in paragliding they lose all connection with the ground, find the height “unreal” and aren’t afraid. If you know yourself, ask: is it the height that scares me, or the moment of take-off? If it’s take-off, parasailing will be easier.
Which one for the view?
Both give you Ölüdeniz’s most beautiful view, but from different angles. In parasailing you look from the sea at the lagoon, Belcekız and Babadağ, with the mountain rising in front of you. In paragliding you see the whole bay, the lagoon and the coastline from above as a wide panorama.
Who should choose which?
Parasailing may suit you better if:
- you’re flying for the first time and want a controlled experience,
- you want to fly side by side with your partner or a friend,
- you’re spending the day at the sea and want to fit in a short activity,
- you don’t want to run or make an effort at take-off.
Paragliding may suit you better if:
- you’re looking for a longer, higher flight,
- you can set aside half a day for the experience,
- a short take-off run isn’t a problem for you.
Many guests get to know the “feeling of flying” with parasailing first and move on to paragliding a few days later. This order works well, especially for anyone who wants to get used to height.
Safety and health conditions
Weather is decisive in both activities, and no one should fly in unsuitable conditions. Pregnancy, serious heart and blood-pressure conditions, recent surgery, and back and neck problems can rule out both activities. The rules we apply to parasailing are on our safety and rules page. For paragliding, always ask the operator about pilot licences and insurance.
Recording and photos
Paragliding operators usually offer footage taken by the pilot during the flight. With parasailing you can have your flight filmed from the air by drone or with a professional camera from the boat.
One last question to help you decide
Ask yourself: “Do I want to see Ölüdeniz, or do I want to feel what flying is like?” For the view and an easy experience, choose parasailing; for long gliding and the thrill of high altitude, choose paragliding.
