Ölüdeniz is one of Türkiye’s most relaxed seaside towns for families with children: a shallow, calm lagoon, a seafront with everything within walking distance, and activities that children and adults can enjoy on the same day. But on a family holiday “safe” matters as much as “fun”. In this guide, as a team that welcomes families on Belcekız Beach every day, we explain how to plan water sports with children.
- For swimming with small children, the calm water of the lagoon; for activities, the bay in front of Belcekız Beach.
- Family-friendly activities: banana, big mable, canoe, boat tour, speed boat; parasailing with a parent if suitable.
- Every activity has age and weight requirements; always tell the team your child’s age.
- Put activities in the morning; rest in the shade during the midday heat.
Lagoon or Belcekız Beach?
They are side by side but meet different needs:
| Ölüdeniz Lagoon | Belcekız Beach | |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Calmer and shallower on most days | Open bay, can get choppy during the day |
| Entry | Nature park, paid | Public, free |
| Motorised activities | Not allowed inside the lagoon | Water sports take place in front of this beach |
| Best for | Swimming and playing with small children | Activities, restaurants and a seafront walk |
Many families spend the morning in the lagoon and move to Belcekız in the afternoon for an activity. For more about the beach, see our Belcekız Beach page.
Water sports you can do with children
Banana: the right choice for a first experience
The banana is a classic, low-intensity towable ridden in a row. Riding together with a parent makes it a fun and reassuring start for children.
Big Mable: the whole family on the same ride
The Big Mable, which takes up to eight people, is ideal for large families. Everyone is in the water at the same time, so the children are never alone.
Canoe: calm and educational
A two-person canoe is a great activity for a parent and child. There’s no engine and you set the pace; children can watch the clear water while learning to paddle. For details, see our SUP and canoe guide.
Boat tour and speed boat: the sea without getting in
A boat tour is a calm cove-to-cove trip; a speed boat is a short, fast coastal tour. Neither requires swimming, and both can even be considered for families with babies (please ask us in advance about joining with a baby).
Parasailing: a double flight with a parent
Children above the age limit can go parasailing with a parent. Take-off and landing are from the boat, and the flight is controlled. Our team assesses suitability based on your child’s age and weight. Before a first flight, our parasailing guide is a good read for the whole family.
What isn’t suitable for families
Hard activities like the phantom, and activities that require skill and swimming such as wakeboard and water ski, are not suitable for small children. For teenagers, suitability is assessed based on age, weight, swimming ability and experience.
Safety: what to check as a parent
- A properly sized life jacket. A child’s life jacket must suit the child’s weight and be fastened snugly. If it slides easily over the head, it is too loose.
- Listen to the briefing together with your child. Repeat in your own words what to hold and what to do if they fall in.
- Insist that age and weight limits are respected. Don’t accept limits being stretched with “it’ll be fine”; these limits exist for safe use of the equipment.
- Weather and sea conditions. Avoid hard activities when waves and wind pick up.
- What your child wants. If your child is scared, don’t push; you can always try again the next day.
In the summer months, midday temperatures in Ölüdeniz are high and the sun’s effect by the sea builds up unnoticed. Don’t neglect water, hats, T-shirts and shade to protect children from sunstroke and dehydration; plan activities for the morning and late afternoon.
